It´s been already two years since I finally handed my diploma-thesis and managed to get my exam – 24 months of great work and life experiences abroad in Asia and now in Southern Africa. And during this time I realised how much I owe my motivation and experiences from non-formal education but especially how much I owe as well my university. Therefore I was honored as the OSI Club, the alumni-network of the politicial science faculty for FU Berlin, asked me to contribute to their newsletter. Will be nice to give something more back to my university – but first the adventures continues in Southern Africa…

After I finally socialised with Singapore and my new beloved home in Southeast-Asia and thought I will get bored soon the “Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association” invited me from 20th until 24th July to a training-course for young journalists from private and state-owned media. That invitation was totally exeptional as Myanmar was not inviting any foreign journalist after their “Saffron Revolution” in 2007 and after some official visits I really got the visa and was together with an American colleague the first foreign journalists conduction a training-course inside the country.

After the one-week course, where I managed to see more than 50 young journalists in the training and around 250 young activists from the civil society, I was amazed by their hospitality and mood. As there will be elections in 2010 especially young people prepare for that “window of opportunity” and realise at the moment that the administration is opening up channels for cooperation. Therefore I was more than happy to train journalists, which had never before any formal training – as the last journalism faculty closed thirty years ago. And I realised that you can read a lot about the country in our foreign media, scientific books and talks with people outside the country but it is very worth to experience the country before you finally make up your mind and paint all black and white. I realised that there is much grey and opportunities inside the country although the country is still a military junta with no democratic elements. But I was happy to assist with journalism experiences and skills and believes that such cooperation can assist their people. Attached you find an article, that I wrote in German for the journalism-magazine “M”, which explaines my experiences and introduces in the media landscape of Myanmar. I hope to be back soon to experience again the people and their country, which was an amazing adventure for me.

After so many years as freelancer and my own boss working for NGOs and governmental institutions, I am finally also caught up in an office-job for the next months. Due to a lot of great coincidence I started to work for the “Office of Regional Cooperation in Asia” of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) here in Singapur. As project-manager I am responsible to work on governance-projects with ASEAN and stakeholders of social dialogue, like ASETUC and other regional partners. Additionally I am following up my media-passion and work as media-consultant for the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) on their online-portal AYCN.net all over Asia and also for establishing a substainable Asia-European Network of Young Journalists with the European Youth Press and Asia-Europe Foundation. This combination from regional governance and media-projects is a great start to get introduced to the region and experience Asia, as it involves a lot of travelling and work with very interesting partners from diverse countries. Let´s see how the office-job transfers me after some months and hope to stay flexible and open-minded – but I have seen from a lot of colleagues, that this should be possible. :)

The days in Vietnam are passing by and it seems that I stay already for weeks in this magnificient country between Saigon and Hanoi. After experiencing the tinny but amazing effective Cu Chi-tunnels in Saigon we went up for snorckeling in Nha Trang and further on to Hoi An, which is an amazing mixture of French lifestyle and Vietnamese kindness plus great beaches. For the first time I experienced riding a motor-bike trough little vietnamese villages and had some inviews in the Cham-culture of My Son. While knowing that Angkor Wat in Cambodia is even bigger I was amazed by their abilities and the great architecture in the middle of the dschungle.

After spending some days on the road and in minibusses we finally arrived in Hanoi and relaxed two more days on boat in the Halong Bay, which is pretty touristic but an amazing adventure – life can be so easy with sunset, rocks out of the water and U2 in the ears… And we learned during the tour, that the vietnamese Slogan: “Same, Same but Different” is always right.

Only after receiving my visa from the Vietnamese embassy in Singapore I realized, that socialism is still living and that Vietnam is still a socialistic republic. A lot of rememberances from my childhood came back and I hoped to see a great country – and after four days travelling from Saigon to Hanoi I am overwhelmed! Not only the red flags and the preparation of the “Labour Day” but as well the school uniforms and Ernst-Thälmann-Schools remember me on my childhood in GDR and make me smile.

But Vietnam is not only good history but a great country for backpacking. Together with Jörg I started from Saigon and had already great experiences in this crazy city with its millions of moto-bikes, as I visited a sauna and found out by aa German-speaking guy only after an hour, that this is the only gay-meeting place in the whole town… that explained a lot… After rescued myselfes from these experiences I had great food, was looking at poor dogs that would end soon in the soup and was snorckeling today in Nha Trang with amazing fishes and sights under water. And as temperature is same like Singapore but not as humid I enjoy life very much with great seafood and amazing low prices. Hopefully I can tell much more great stories after arriving in Hanoi but I am sure, that this country will be one of my favourite travel-destination.

After arriving back to Singapore without any university-pressure nor any other voluntary engagement I started to look seriously into job-offers, specially in governance and media in the region. As there were not so many opportunities I was more than lucky to receive different offers and went last week even to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia (see pictures from the great city attached) to speak with a regional media-programme, which is working as well in Myanmar. The offered tasks and challenges were really great and so the decision was not easy but I decided finally to stay in Singapore and enjoy my private life over here. And I started yesterday working as consultant for the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre for their projects in Asia and a fulltime job will hopefully follow until end of this month.

Additionally like to work as a journalist from here, as you see with this article about a “well-known Bavarian woman in Singapore” and have fun with colleagues, that publish the view out of my window in their media. And the time until ´real work´ starts won´t be wasted as well: I booked flights to Vietnam in two weeks and afterwards Australia and enjoy this freedom of freetime a lot.

After finishing as well the Englis translation of my thesis Susi and me took the chance to explore Malaysia and decided for an amazing island in the South China Sea, near Mersing: Pulau Rawa. That was an excellent decision, better than any bustours with grannys to Malaka. After arriving with the bus from Singapore we had accomodation in Mersing and enjoyed English movies, that are shown in the restaurants as “open air” cinema. Next morning we started with the ferry to Rawa. After one hour a cute little island shown up with beautiful white beaches and rocky cliffs around – a bit like Hollywood but for real!

Tow days of snorkeling in the corals with fishes and sea urchin, canoeing around the island and sunbathing in the sun with 30 degrees and more followed and were crowned by barbecue on the sea while watching the sunset. Relaxed and tanned we went back home to Singapore and will for sure visit Malaysia a next time – with its amazing landscape, friendly people and great seaside!

As the majority of Singapore people are Chinese the Chinese New Year closed here everything for some days and so we took the chance and went to Brunei, a small kingdom on the Borneo island which is famous for its rich oil-reserves and absolut monarchy. Only about 380.000 people living in this kingdom on an area more than seven times bigger then Singapore – so I hoped for lot of space, green woods and great wildlife. And after meeting with Kamal, a friend of mine from a seminar in Korea, I was greeted by a small capital-city next to a river with their famous water villages, calm life and great and green woods all-over. And we fully experienced the magnificient rainforests of Temburung the next day with an amazing longboat-trip, a walk on the canopy-trail 40 meters over the ground on top of the trees, and an excellent guide that showed us monkeys and all different species of plants and trees but as well explained his background from the famous headhunter-tribe and their now-a-days-life in the Iban longhouses.

After experiencing this nature adventure we went back to the capital, enjoyed a typical Brunei cinema-night and had next day a drive to the oil-field in Seria some hours away. We also visited the six-star-hotel Empire and had some great italian food in a absolut crazy athmosphere with strong rain and wind outside and a fancy italian restaurant inside on the ´end of the world´. After having a look to the water-villages on the riverside Susi and me flight back and I am very much exited about Singapore being the hub to the region and hope for a lot of more trips coming to experience more of great Asia.
