After so many years as freelancer and my own boss working for NGOs and governmental institutions, I am finally also caught up in an office-job for the next months. Due to a lot of great coincidence I started to work for the “Office of Regional Cooperation in Asia” of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) here in Singapur. As project-manager I am responsible to work on governance-projects with ASEAN and stakeholders of social dialogue, like ASETUC and other regional partners. Additionally I am following up my media-passion and work as media-consultant for the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) on their online-portal AYCN.net all over Asia and also for establishing a substainable Asia-European Network of Young Journalists with the European Youth Press and Asia-Europe Foundation. This combination from regional governance and media-projects is a great start to get introduced to the region and experience Asia, as it involves a lot of travelling and work with very interesting partners from diverse countries. Let´s see how the office-job transfers me after some months and hope to stay flexible and open-minded – but I have seen from a lot of colleagues, that this should be possible. :)

When I started thinking about my thesis I just wanted to realise a topic, which had afterwards an effect on real life and did not end up in a dustbin after reading by the professor and maybe me. Than it speeded up fast… I managed to convince an MP as my supervisor, got an internship in Gaborone and most astonishingly I managed to finish all other stuff for my university in time. But it gets even more crazy and better: on Monday I finished an overview about integration theories and got support from one of the best profs at my university. Today SADC confirmed, that this paper will be the input to a workshop, where the water-guys decide upon their future integration method. Amazing – from university to consultancy in four weeks… I hope for even more speed, lets see where it drives me. ;)

But this day got even more crazy, after FES called me and asked what I am supposed to do next two days. Well, I just had normal working days in mind and so they told me, that the flight is almost booked and I have to represent the FES in a training in Francistown. Two hours later everything was agreed and booked and nobody was really surprised about the short preparation: “normal procedure, as we do not even have the final programme”. I really want to figure out, what real speed means over here. ;)

As me and Martin Hofmann, the other diploma-aspirant working for GTZ, normally work from the GTZ office everything was going smoothly there and fine. But our old office from Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, where we stayed some weeks in the beginning, went on an internal seminar and asked us to babysit the office. We thought no problem but reality was different…

One hour after the FES people left the energy was gone and we found out, that the bill was not paid for two months – some happened also to our appartment, so I lined up for two times two hours at Botswana Power Cooperation to fix the energy… which came back two days later only. The same time Martin had a lot of fun with the contractor company, who was employed to fix the roof of the foundation and lay new roof-sheets un the roof until the FES people come back. In the afternoon all workers suddently left and the roof stayed half open – half closed. Well done we thought, they know what they do cause they are professionells… but we realised at 20 oclock, after the first raindrops went down, that there might be a small problem and went straight to the office. It took us three hours of removing all the sensitive financial files, computers and electric equipment until we saved the office interior but it really rained through and the walls, the lamps and the carpet got wet. In the morning the company came back and apologised for their mistake, they were praying the whole night – well, that did not helped them a lot, so I managed to negotiate some deals with them and they removed all isolation and wet wood from the roof and fixed the whole roof in one (!) day before new rain arrived. After the FES people came back in the evening office was fixed and only the carpet stayed wet and the walls needed to paint a bit but we seriously had two amazing days full of surprises. And we learned: if somebody ask you to watch out for their office better be prepared for everything. :)

After visiting yesterday the fancy GTZ office in the United Nation Building and enjoying the “down-town-athmosphere” I am back to the office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation to work on my thesis. The GTZ office is directly supporting the SADC (Southern African Development Cooperation) cooperation and their headquarter, which is some hundred meters around the corner from the GTZ next to the parliament and the presidents office. Inside the GTZ office there are around 20 – 30 people working on three departments (1) water-policy, (2) governance and SADC reform and (3) peace and security and I really liked that they are passionated about their tasks and hope to join them soon.

Cause as their project is visited this week by two auditors I moved back to the office of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, which is organising workshops and trainings with civi society actors as well as media and youth NGOs. Inside the office we are currently two diploma-aspirants, which are both working on SADC water-cooperation, and two FES intern and so we occupy the whole office while the project manager and resident representative are on a training in Mocambique. So I enjoy the beautiful garden and keep on going to get an overview on my topic to start writing next week.

After some great days in Kabul I really enjoy life here and Germany is soooo far away, even if you meeting Germans everywhere and all people love Germans, cause “they were never fighting against us”… :) And I got introduced to this town by our office, Ursula and Zahir, on several trips but also by some friends, that showed me good restaurants and of course journalists, that stay here. In the office we sent out now the new “call for candidates” for the “Young Leaders Forum 2007/2008″, that I wrote together with Sulaiman. The forum is a one-year trainee-course for young leaders in soft-skills but also with meeting to experts, politicians and journalists. I met them one year ago in Berlin and was amazed about their positions, they have already taken considering their youth.

The next days I work on the young journalists network and potential exchanges with “the world” and I love do to the work, cause the country lackes independent media and that would make a big difference to the people – even if only 200.000 have internet-access, the news are spread out via radio and TV and reach them. Next week the SPD chairman Kurt Beck is coming to our office, so we are already cleaning – which is not that easy, cause after the rain we have only dust outside on the streets…

After great flights about Munich and Dubai, where I first experienced a first-world and afterwards a third-world airport I arrived perfect and fine in Kabul. From the mountains I had a great overview about the city but specially the huge mountains arround, snow covered. Together with Ursula Koch-Laugwitz, the office leader of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, I checked out Kabul and realized, that it´s rainy, misty and dirty. But they say, that the spring will start soon and I will forget about this weather afterwards very fast. Let´s hope so. ;)

Today I am the first day in my new office and hope for great work. Thats gonna be a great challenge here, as I like it. :)
